My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999 is actually starting to show the eponymous person “my” is having a love story with showing signs of feelings for Akime. If you’ve been watching the anime from the very beginning, this is actually a pretty massive moment. Yes, we saw Yamada actually taking the initiative to protect Akime during that scary IRL encounter a few episodes ago, but this is something much, much greater. And, sure, it was bound to happen because it’s a romance anime and the title of the series basically gives it away (unless this was going to be the most one-sided love story to ever come out of the anime industry). But I think that what makes the execution of Yamada’s actions so perfect is how the anime is showing Yamada change.
Although we’ve gotten plenty of examples throughout the series already, the latest episode starts by giving us a few more examples as to how detached emotionally Yamada is from girls. In fact, they prove that he doesn’t seem to comprehend when girls are hitting on him or why his rejections would be hurting her (if he even realizes he’s rejecting them). All of this is exacerbated by the fact that he just doesn’t have the energy to care or to understand.
