We now know for sure that Tsukasa is actually immortal. But we don’t know how or why. Regardless, TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You season 2 episode 9 finally addresses the question that we have been wondering about since season 1 episode 1, one that I was able to write about for Screen Rant since there was the allure of the supernatural as opposed to just being a story about a romance anime (which doesn’t perform well).

The way season 2 episode 9 tackled this question was actually very artfully done. It began with a teaser of an opening scene from the past, followed by extra references in the present day, before finally returning to that flashback in the episode’s final moments. The opening scene, which is clearly a flashback based on the coloring, creates the impression that a young Tsukasa somehow survived the recent destruction of an entire town. She’s initially alone and not faring well before she stumbles across an older girl. It’s clear by the garments she and the older girl are wearing that they might be from a different time — that, or they were participating in a festival where participants are encouraged to wear traditional Japanese garbs before the still unidentified devastation ensued. It’s also noteworthy that there’s very little color in this scene except for a red ornament in the older girl’s hair.
