Yuri Is My Job! Ep 9: Fighting Against Being “The Good Kid” Through Lies

Yuri Is My Job! episode 9 just gave us our second flashback. But this doesn’t mean that we didn’t get to experience the nuanced dichotomy of “the act” and “the truth,” which this anime is so great at capturing. That’s because Hime is involved, and as we’ve known since episode 1, she’s always been about creating a facade. So there’s plenty of that goodness to be had. Even better is that the flashback concerns Kanoko. Specifically, it focuses on how she and Hime became friends, which is critical because, where episode 8 ended, Sumika confronts Kanoko about her feelings for Hime and articulates her plan to Kanoko that she won’t let her tear the cafe apart.

While I was always curious how Kanoko fell for Hime, what I really appreciated about the flashback is that, despite getting my curiosity met, it introduced the nuanced concept of “the good kid” and what that meant to Kanoko and Hime’s characters and added more connections between Kanoko and Hime’s other potential love interest Mitsuki.
