Medium’s recommendations are wack

I think in the last few months Medium has geared up its recommendation engine. It’s mostly based on the Follow button (which is available for both authors and publications).

This is a quite easy recommendation model: just notify everyone who follows the author or the publication once a new piece is published by either the author or the publication.

What I notice is that most of Medium’s recommendations aren’t on par with why I pushed the Follow button. This is quite unfortunate as I don’t want to waste too much time on reading content I don’t like (my 24 hours are already filled up but I’m information addicted). So what I would want to recommend is a This Is Good Stuff button instead and recommend based on the content of the piece I just liked. Technically I guess this would mean doing some kind of deep learning (bingo!) on the text instead of doing just some author graph network analysis.

One clap, two clap, three clap, forty?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
