Always doing. It’s time to start writing…
I’ve always been a doer, and I only do things I believe in. I’ve never been one to get caught up in taking credit, marketing, or even celebrating the work I do. So much is this the case that after my business school interview, my interviewer emphatically pointed out that the most valuable parts of my story are nowhere on my resume. I see a problem in the world, and I think about how I can be part of its solution. It’s that simple. It’s grueling and often lonely work. The reward comes from watching a person’s soul light up when you’ve made an authentic difference in their lives.
That doesn’t seem to be enough anymore — I mean it doesn’t matter to me personally, but it matters when it comes to the grander impact I could be making. In today’s world even doing good has become competitive (am I complaining? nope.) to the point where we have to carve out time to advance the discussion and the thoughtforms that lead to action. I have always been a deeply intentional and mindful person, and I find that in recent years I have been more fixated on the destination of a better world that I have not paid homage to the journey or the people that make it possible.
So I begin my story with me (but that won’t last long because the protagonists of this story are our entrepreneurs)…
I’m an environmental activist and educator turned venture capitalist and impact investor. I founded Great Turning Advisors (GTA) as a business accelerator for social entrepreneurs. I am passionate about accelerating the growth of for profit enterprises that serve social and environmental good. As the President & Founder of GTA my personal mission is to direct more seed and venture capital toward sustainable business models and build a community of social innovators to solve the world’s toughest challenges. I believe we can move toward a more responsible and equitable economy rooted in our shared values by giving investors and consumers more opportunities to use their wealth in accordance with their values. My professional background is in Environmental Studies, History, nonprofits and Private Equity. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies from the University of New England and an MBA in Social Entrepreneurship from Washington University in St. Louis.
I’m looking forward to sharing in the discussions that will shape the future of a more just economy that nurtures healthy people and a healthy planet. Please follow my team’s journey with GTA as we travel the nation nurturing the next generation of social entrepreneurs and build a social enterprise portfolio to be the envy of impact investors everywhere.
