I personally think Y2K is the perfect example. Global Warming has been political from the beginning. Don’t get me wrong, pollution has been, is currently, and will be a problem that must be fought. But, most of the solutions to climate change, don’t require government programs. They do require the government to get out of the way and let people try things on a larger scale. For example: are you aware of the Ocean Iron Fertilization work by Russ George [see: http://russgeorge.net/] or the Holistic Grazing work by Allen Savory [see the Ted Talk by Allen @ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpTHi7O66pI ].
Both of these projects are being blocked by environmentalists because these projects do not require governments to implement the projects. For background reading you might like [http://www.planetexperts.com/two-years-russ-george-illegally-dumped-iron-pacific-salmon-catches-400/] By the way, Russ George has not gone to jail for illegally dumping iron because the Canadian authorities knew about and sanctioned the project long before any iron was added to the ocean. I personally think the Canadian authorities did not think it would do anything. Why prevent what is going to be a futile experiment. Adding Iron worked and brought back the fish. Now Salmon fishing is at historic lows again, but NO… we can’t add any iron into the ocean.
I am not a pessimist. I am a Definite Optimist. I think the US and Canadian governments should try the Iron experiment again on a sustain level. What would you do? Add Iron to the ocean again or let the salmon slowly die out?
What say you?
