My last year in the office work force was not a “happy” one. Physically I was in constant pain, mentally I was not as focused as I had been due to the meds I was taking, and we, the management were feeling the strains of increased competition and work slowing down. One day when things were particularly brutal, I was whistling some “glory and praise” song as I worked in my office after a very difficult staff meeting. Another employee, a Muslim and a friend of mine, came over to my desk and asked me, “How can you be in such a good mood with all this going on?” I looked up smiling and said, “I just remember who I’m really working for”. He shook his head and walked away… He didn’t understand the spiritual aspect of dedicating our work to the Glory of God.

Our readings today (1 COR 2:10–16, LK 4:31–37) can help if we are struggling with worldly pressures and problems. First St. Paul says, “Now the natural man does not accept what pertains to the Spirit of God, for to him it is foolishness, and he cannot understand it, because it is judged spiritually.” Jesus casts out a demon in our Gospel making the onlookers say “What is there about his word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” Stay close to Jesus during times of trials, He is in control!

Sometimes another employee, a customer, a boss, a friend or family member, or just worldly circumstances attack our very “spiritual” sensibilities. This can be intentional or not… Regardless, it’s important to keep the spiritual realm of who and what we are are the forefront of our beings! We are Christians, destined for Eternal Life with Christ! The world is temporal and passing. It is under the authority and dominion of God. What matters is how we spiritually relate to and function in obedience and friendship with Christ as we travel through this world as pilgrims on our spiritual journey home to God for Eternity. Jesus already won the battle against sin and evil… we have to be faithful and patient as the final skirmishes are mopped up in our lives. Jesus is in control. Trust and believe. Pick a good song or Scripture verse that helps you maintain your equilibrium during tough times and KEEP IT ON YOUR LIPS. It really helps! Peace and All Good, my friends!
