Always Be Uncomfortable
I’ve been uncomfortable for the past year and I love it! Over a year ago, I started Outco which is a program that provides interview prep for software engineers to help them land their dream job. Everything was uncomfortable from the time I stood outside of Dev Bootcamp to get our first customers, being asked by security to not solicit on their property, to figuring out ways to acquire more customers at scale. Every waking second has been nothing short of exhilarating to know that we are making a difference in people’s lives. To date, we’ve helped over 170+ software engineers level up.
Being uncomfortable is one of the most unsettling feelings where you don’t know what you’re doing, but you want to succeed. People complain about their jobs being monotonous, but no one wants to venture out into the unknown without having a clear path to getting where they want to go which is why the 99% work for the top 1%.
Everyone makes excuses of needing the right idea before leaving their comfortable life, but the truth is that there is never a right idea or right time. The time is now. Every idea has already been thought of, many have tried to execute and few have been successful. Many companies are just variations of other companies that are attempting to solve the same problem.
People fear about working at a startup because 90% of startups fail within their first year. However, people who work at startups, especially unfunded ones, grow at an exponential rate in their career and personal development. The main reason why people who work at startups are able to grow is because they are forced. Startups either innovate and be creative or they’re going be looking for a new job very soon. With limited resources and time, startup employees need to make sure every second counts.
Every second of every day, startups in the same space are always trying to figure out how to take market-share from each other. Business is a battleground and it’s always those who continue to hustle end up on top.
Something that isn’t talked about a lot is that working at a startup causes a tremendous amount of emotional stress. There are going to be some days where you think you’re on top of the world and other where you feel you are so screwed. You need to remember the only thing that will guarantee failure is giving up.
In the end, life is all about developing ourselves to be the person who we always thought we could become. We should always stay foolish, hungry, and uncomfortable.
Live life with no regrets.
