Why I’m Reframing Success in 2018
My resolution for 2018 is to reframe my definition of success. It might not sound like the typical resolutions you’re used to hearing, but here’s why.
My journey toward self-improvement and self-development taught me a lot of valuable lessons about myself. Mainly, I recognized that my definition of success was causing me dissatisfaction and unfulfillment. So I decided to take a step back so I could reflect.
During my period of reflection, I had the opportunity to have insightful conversations with those people in my life who were not only successful but fulfilled. I wanted to apply what I learned from these discussions into my own life so that I could achieve a greater sense of joy.
I hope that by sharing what I have learned from my conversations it could add value to your life as you pursue success this new year:
1. Focus on competing with yourself, not your peers around you.
We know that we should only focus on ourselves, but we continue to compare ourselves to our peers on social media or covet the lives of the celebrities we see in mainstream media. We compete with others despite the fact that our friends are not always perfect and that the life of a star is not always glamorous. When we compete with those around us, we can be beaten. There will still be someone better looking, more intelligent, more charismatic, or more influential. It can cause us to get discouraged and exhausted. We would never be friends with someone who is always trying to be better than us at everything, so why do we do it to ourselves by creating silly success comparisons? When we compete against ourselves, we can focus on self-improvement and self-development. To live your best life, you have to remember that your only competition is yourself, not those around you.
2. If you want things to be better, you have to be better. If you want things to change, you have to change.
In life, wishing and wanting for better is often just not enough. Often our greatest successes have come when we are in tune with our values, beliefs, and priorities. In life, we reap what we sow. If we have a cynical and pessimistic outlook on life, why are we surprised when the situations and people around us respond the same way. When we bring an attitude of negativity, self-pity, and defeat with us, it contaminates the positivity of what can be a fantastic year. Leave the negative views in the past and don’t contaminate the future. Focus on getting the priorities in life corrected so that opportunities and situations will not only change but become better.
3. You cannot get new blessings off of old sacrifices.
Some of us are looking for the elevator to success, but what most of us do not realize is that success is often a rocky road. On that road, there are bumps, roadblocks, and detours. With our society focused on quick results and instant gratification, sometimes we look for a shortcut to achieve our ambitions. We might need to cut back on binging that new Netflix show to work on our craft or skip happy hour to work on our business plan or get to the gym in the early morning hours to get that dream body. Whatever the case, we need to continue to make sacrifices regularly to achieve continued blessings. There are so many more distractions around us nowadays that it consumes us, and we end up losing our momentum. Our mind gives up before our body does, so continue to work harder and dream bigger. Remember that the blessings of success require new sacrifices daily, and do not fall into the trap of thinking that yesterday’s actions are enough to accomplish today’s aspirations.
4. Focus on meaning, purpose, and fulfillment.
When we focus on finding a meaning and purpose for our lives, we find a sense of fulfillment. We all derive meaning and purpose in what we value, from personal development to meaningful relationships. When there is fulfillment, we put our heart and our soul into everything that we do. Figure out what you value and find ways to optimize that value. Simply put, listen more, read more, question your intentions, have more in-depth conversations, and look for more inspiration in your life. Meaning, purpose, and fulfillment allows us to be passionate and helps us go to bed at night feeling like we made the most of each opportunity.
5. Be Consistent.
Changes in our life do not always happen overnight. When are consistent with our thoughts, behaviors, actions, and beliefs, the rest naturally flows. The lack of consistency is what causes some of the problems in our lives, and we need that same consistency to identify the solutions. If we are consistent with our efforts and mindset, we might not see the changes in a day, but when we reflect a year from now, we’ll be astonished at how far we’ve come. A lack of consistency also slows our momentum, so it is essential to recognize that consistency is vital to any endeavor you pursue, personal or professional.
So Happy New Year and I hope that your journey will be filled with success, fulfillment, improvement, and action.
