While not much research has been done on the subject. Some food researchers believe that eating only organic foods may help speed up weight loss for bariatric patients and others who are trying to lose weight through dieting.

Before elaborating, it’s important to note that as with any food regime, experts stress that eating organically should be done as a way to make it a lifestyle, not as a temporary fix for losing a few extra pounds. Eating only organic foods is a great investment- both in time and money. Not every grocery store and restaurant carry organic food, so visiting co-ops, stores like Whole Foods, and other retailers that specialize in carrying organic goods are your best bet for making it easy to eat organic.

The reason why organic foods may help you to lose more weight than regular, non-organic foods is the fact that they usually contain fewer hormones, pesticides, and preservatives. Many experts claim that they are toxic to the human body.

Besides these unnatural toxins that are being put into the body via the food we eat, organic vegetables usually have more of their original nutrients than their regular counterparts. This is because they are usually from a source close to where they are being purchased, so they are fresher, and the added ingredients placed into foods may also cause nutrient loss.

While there haven’t been many studies in the United States regarding the nutrients of food based on how it is processed…

“A recent study is known as the “Quality Low Input Food Project” ended its four-year research in April 2009 in which it examined the differences in food production systems and how it affected the nutritional value, taste and safety of food in Europe. The findings of this extensive project concluded that organic fruits and vegetables contained as much as 40 percent higher levels of cancer-fighting antioxidants, which also reduce the risk of heart disease. Additionally, organic crops had elevated levels of zinc, a beneficial mineral needed by the human body. They also discovered that milk from organically-fed herds had up to 90 percent more antioxidants than milk from herds fed with a conventionally grown diet.”

Because organic food is more costly than regular food, many Americans are hesitant to try it. However, after spending money and time on getting bariatric surgery, it should only be right to give your body the best nutrients available by only eating organic fruits, vegetables, and other products.

Begin by taking small steps and exchanging out the regular produce you buy with organic versions, as you get used to the price increase and taste, begin to implement other organic foods into your diet, like flour, pasta, and meat. Soon, buying organic will become second nature. Just make sure that any organic food you buy has been approved by your bariatric surgeon.
