Well Joe, your clearly wrote your response because YOU took “personal umbrage” at what Mr. Zunger wrote. The way you project your own insecurity and hate is transparent as cellophane.

After all, your accusation against Mr. Zunger doesn’t even fit the content of what he wrote. How does Mr. Zunger romanticize code when he clearly expresses that the ability to code is NOT the most important aspect of an engineer’s job, or even to the entire concept and philosophy of engineering? Good coders are replaceable. Having expert coding ability at the level of “H7” is an expectation. I don’t even know what position “H7” represents, but I know it’s above 1–6 yet still isn’t a “word” job title (which he clearly expresses is distinct from a “number” job title).

Engineering is about solving problems. The most pressing and important problems involve people — often, LOTS OF PEOPLE, all working together (in or out of alignment) in a variety of ways. And empathy is an absolute requirement when it comes to dealing with people and solving people problems. Women are on average “better” at men than empathy, whether it’s for natural reasons, or culturally-imposed reasons, or both. So — their insight, especially in places where they are under-represented, is extremely valuable.

“ it’s even more troubling that you and Google did exactly what he said would happen; you silence and shame him.”

I guess you get a bonus point for not *literally* screaming “BUT FREEDOM OF SPEECH” however this comic bears repeating — often, and loudly:
