Thanks for your response and insights jeorf.

My main message is not that HealthIT sucks, rather that it is not where it should be which is partially due to the interoperability struggle.

I will definitely not contradict your experience with EMRs and I know lots of healthcare professionals share the same opinion. Unfortunately many of those first generation of EMRs are not much more than digital paper with the difference that paper is most of the time easier to work with. One of the reasons why there is seamingly little progress is that those EMRs don’t integrate well with newer, more intuitive software leading to a status quo and persisting frustrations. Furthermore the migration to a new EMR is, as you probably know, a costly and time consuming task.

I believe HealthIT software companies are starting to understand that the user needs to be put in the center and should be involved in the design. That’s the only way to avoid building systems with poor user experience that take away time from the healthcare provider rather than saving time. Time which he or she can not spent with the patient.

It is up to HealthIT companies to restore the faith of people like you and jointly - HealthIT companies and healthcare actors - draw a HealthIT future where both the patient and provider benefit from the promise of HealthIT.

The promise might currently feel like a long portrayed lie but I’m conviced that we are not Waiting for Godot here. The coming decade will show what a tremendous help HealthIT can be to all involved in sustaining good health.
