Unicorn & Narwal: A Night Out in Seattle

From its infamous grunge scene to the iconic Space Needle dominating the skyline Seattle is a city renowned for its eccentricities. These quirks extend especially into the city’s food and drink scene, and this is perhaps no more exemplified than in Unicorn and Narwal located in the Capital Hill neighborhood.

Unicorn and Narwal are two carnival themed bars located in the same venue. Unicorn’s, the bar, occupies the first floor, although the atmosphere is vastly different from any other bar you’re likely to stumble across. Taxidermy animal heads line the pink, candy-striped walls, and zebra-print booths line the back of the bar. The vibe of Unicorn feels like a wild cross between a circus, carnival, mermaid lair, and gay bar.

Unicorn’s vibe is definitely reflected in its downstairs counterpart, Narwal. The subterranean saloon is definitely not for the faint of heart, as it takes every element of Unicorn and heightens them (yes, that is possible). When descending the wooden staircase into Narwal you feel as if you’re entering into the belly of a pirate ship, a pirate ship which happens to be lit by disco balls, playing Kylie Minogue music, and with an arcade game with some naughty prizes.

The quirkiness of either venue doesn’t end at the decor either as both the drinks and food are equally unique. Served in both venues are such unique drinks as Adult Root Beer (vanilla vodka, hard root beer, whipped cream), My Little Pony (apple vodka, peach vodka, oj, triple sec, sprite, grenadine), The Cereal Killer (fruit loop vodka, rumchata liquer, sprite, grenadine), and their signature Unicorn Jizz (mango vodka, triple sec, oj, sour, sprite, grenadine). Food includes the equally irreverently named Unicorn Balls (pork, cheese, and potato croquettes), the poutine dog, the magi-corn dog, deep fried snickers, and such typical Seattle vegan-friendly fare as vegan quinoa tots, vegan chili, and the vegan quinoa burger. If the bar food isn’t enough to entice you swing by on Sunday afternoons for Mimosa’s Cabaret, a brunch buffet in Narwal that includes one of the city’s best drag shows.

For anyone planning a trip to the Rainy City, and are looking for a uniquely Seattle night out head to Capital Hill and hit up Pike Street for an especially memorable night of bar hopping. Whether you’re planning on beginning or ending your night there, a night out in Seattle would be considered incomplete without a visit to Unicorn & Narwal.
