This is really well written, and I resonate with your experience. Trauma makes us look for extreme ways to escape the confines of our identity. Androgyny should be more well-accepted, too, and this goes for other boundaries, I think. For instance, my interracial son has had a tough time with his identity, being rejected by both races for different reasons — not being white enough or not being black enough. Now he is just himself.
