Introducing… The Eagle 2017

--

The College is delighted to present the 2017 issue of its annual record.

It has been an exciting year for St John’s, with the launch of our major fundraising campaign, Free Thinking, and a brand new masterplan for estate strategy — both of which you can read more about within the ninety-ninth volume of The Eagle.

In our 2017 issue, Dr Fredi Devas — who directed and produced the Cities episode of the BBC’s Planet Earth II series — discusses the importance of making space for wildlife in our urban environment, touching on the positive impact which greenery in cities has on humankind’s productivity, mental health and overall happiness.

We also hear from Johnians who are conducting pioneering research in the arts. Franny Moyle shares her findings on the life and legacy of English Romanticist landscape painter J. M. W. Turner, and Dr Carlo Corsato, a recent Beaufort Visiting Scholar, takes us through an intriguing annotation from the Beneficio di Cristo — an ancient text that can be found in the College’s rare book collection.

Additionally, we catch up with Nicholas Wood, who recounts his career since being Junior Editor of The Eagle under the late Professor Sir Harry Hinsley, plus we interview recent John’s graduate Jonah Hauer-King following his time spent treading the boards with Sir Kenneth Branagh in The Entertainer at the Garrick Theatre in London.

Later on in the publication we recall the President, Dr Frank Salmon’s address to the congregation celebrating the College’s Quincentenary, and Mark Wells, Domestic Bursar of St John’s, takes us through the nuances of the College’s long-term masterplan, which aims to ensure that this continues to be an inspirational place to live and work, for members and visitors alike. We hope, too, that you enjoy reading the latest news from St John’s sports teams and societies.
