Hey there, fellow entrepreneurs and aspiring business wizards! Today, we’re diving headfirst into the thrilling world of content strategy. Now, before you start picturing boardrooms filled with endless meetings and stacks of spreadsheets, let’s take a collective deep breath and remember that every great journey begins with a single, slightly unsteady step.

Imagine this: you’re a small business owner, ready to conquer the world with your fabulous products and services. You’ve heard whispers about this thing called “content strategy” that could catapult your online presence and attract customers like a magnet. But hold on a second, where in the world do you even begin? Fear not, my friend. We’ve got your back, and we’re here to guide you through those initial steps.

Step 1: Get to Know Your Audience Remember that catchy slogan from “The Karate Kid”? “Wax on, wax off”? Well, this step is like waxing — no pain, all gain! Take a moment to ponder who your ideal customers are. Are they trendy teens, adventurous adults, or maybe even quirky grandparents? Understanding your audience is the key to creating content that resonates with them, like a perfectly harmonized duet between Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran. (YES, I’m a big Swiftie so you will hear from her more often ;) Also, I think she is the greatest content strategy of all, but maybe this will be a blog post on its own. TBH, I stole this idea from a colleague of mine, Frank Eggleton, when he had a dedicated talk at our university about how good she is at understanding her audience and utilizing that — check out his blog as well!)

Step 2: Let Your Creativity Roam Free Now that you have a grasp on your audience, it’s time to unleash your creative prowess. Imagine you’re Picasso, except instead of a paintbrush, you have a trusty pen (or keyboard) in hand. Let your ideas flow like a river, combining informative content with a sprinkle of humor and a dash of wit. With this magical concoction, you’ll craft content that not only educates but also entertains, leaving your readers giggling and begging for more.

Step 3: Choose Your Channels Wisely No, we’re not talking about which streaming service to binge-watch. We mean social media platforms, websites, blogs, podcasts — the whole shebang. Think about where your target audience hangs out and tailor your content to suit those channels. If you’re trying to connect with millennials, consider TikTok dances as your secret weapon. If you’re targeting professionals, LinkedIn articles will be your trusty sidekick. Just like a brave explorer in search of hidden treasures, go where your customers are and captivate them with your content.
