Ayurvedic Remedies for Cold & Cough

So, finally it is the monsoon and it is definite that most of you are suffering from cold and cough already. And where ever you go you have to hear someone sneeze or a cough and as many say that being near someone who is suffering from cold and cough you are bound to get as the virus migrates from one person to other through the medium that is air. Since isolation is neither possible nor desired, so the best option for staying healthy and fit this season is to be completely aware and defeat any potential virus or bacteria before they take over.

A cough and cold is a very common problem and is generally caused by aggravation of Kapha. Sometimes, it is also caused by weak digestion. When the food we eat does not digest properly, it changes into mucus. This mucus or ama reaches the respiratory system and causes cold or a cough. Other causes of a cough and cold are exposure to cold or humid conditions or cold air. There are many ayurvedic medicines for a cough and even home remedies which are perfect for prevention and can also be used at the first sign of sickness.

The very first thing that you should do when you have a cold and cough is cover up your body as your body should be kept warm especially feet, chest, throat, and head. At this time sweating is very helpful. The simplest way to do so is drinking hot spice tea or some other hot drink. In the case of a sore throat, a clove or two cardamoms or a few raisins can be chewed. Even gargling with warm salty water is also useful. These are just the very basics but let me drop down some of the remedies that have been very useful to me. You may wonder why home remedies well, home remedies are natural and beneficial to the body to control the production of mucus, cleanse the system and boost immunity.

Ginger Tea — If you have a running nose ginger tea helps you by relieving you of it and it also expels phlegm from the respiratory tract. Ginger tea is also known for soothing a common cold to make it bearable and perhaps even speed up the recovery process.

Milk and turmeric — Not only ginger tea or masala chai, but also warm milk and turmeric mixture is a popular and a very effective way to fight a cough and cold. This mixture is suitable for children as well as adults as it has no side effects.

Flaxseeds for cold and cough — Boil a few flaxseeds until it thickens and strains the water. Then add a few drops of lime juice and honey to it. Now you can consume the mixture as it will successfully relief you of cold and cough.

Giloy juice — In case you have a chronic cough, you can add 2 tablespoons of Giloy juice with water in the morning every day till your cough gets better. You may ask how it helps? Well, it builds your immunity and brings about a balance among three doshas — Vata, Pita, and Kapha. It acts as an anti-allergic and thus, treats a cough caused due to allergic reactions to smoke, pollution or pollen.

It is a known fact that coughing increases at the night time. Thus it is better to always take the remedy at the night time.
