Desiderius Erasmus(28 October 1466–12 July 1536) was a Dutch Renaissance humanist, social critic, teacher, and theologian. He was one of Europe’s most famous and influential scholars. A man of great intellect who rose from meager beginnings to become one of Europe’s greatest thinkers, he defined the humanist movement in Northern Europe. His translation to Greek of the New Testament brought on a theological revolution, and his views on the Reformation tempered its more radical elements.
Erasmus stands as the supreme type of cultivated common sense applied to human affairs. He rescued theology from the pedantries of the Schoolmen, exposed the abuses of the Church, and did more than any other single person to advance the Revival of Learning. His name given European Union (EU) student exchange programme in 1987. Erasmus Programme is widely known all around Europe now, and gives great opportunities to students also for culture exchange.

Desiderius Erasmus(28 Ekim 1466–12 Temmuz 1536) Hollandalı düşünür, hümanist, öğretmen, teolog. Avrupa’nın en bilinen ve etkin bilim insanlarından biri olan Erasmus, hümanist hareketin başını çekmiş ve Avrupa’ya yayılmasını sağlamış. Erasmus’un Yunanca’dan çevirileri dine yeni bakış açısı kazandırmış, hümanizmin varlığını ortaya koymuş ve kalıplaşmış düşünceleri değiştirmiştir.
Erasmus’un kilisenin sert yapısına, teolojinin doğru bilinen yanlışlarına ve dinin korku dünyasına karşı verdiği mücadele dalındaki en önemli kişilerden biri olmasını sağlamıştır. Erasmus’un ismi Avrupa Birliği (AB)’nin Erasmus öğrenci değişimi programına da verilerek onurlandırılmıştır. Değişim programı Avrupa çapında çok iyi bilinen, öğrenciler için kültürel değişim konusunda da büyük fırsatlar sunan bir programdır.
