Guernica/Pablo Picasso
Guernica is a mural-sized oil painting on canvas by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso completed in June 1937. Standing at 3.49 meters tall and 7.76 meters, the large mural shows the suffering of people wrenched by violence and chaos. Prominent in the composition are a gored horse, a bull, and flames.
The painting was created in response to the bombing of Guernica, a Basque Country village in northern Spain, by Nazi German and fascist Italian war planes at the request of the Spanish Nationalists.
The painting went on to become a symbol indicative of Basque nationalism during the Spanish transition to democracy. Today it is presenting at Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid.
While Picasso was living in Nazi-occupied Paris during World War II, one German officer allegedly asked him, upon seeing a photo of Guernica in his apartment, “Did you do that?” Picasso responded, “No, you did.”

Guernica, Pablo Picasso tarafından 1937'de yapılan, İspanya İç Savaşı sırasında Nazi Almanya’sı ve faşist İtalya’ya ait 28 bombardıman uçağının 26 Nisan 1937'de İspanya’daki Guernica şehrini bombalamasını anlatan, 7,76 m eninde ve 3,49 m yüksekliğinde anıtsal tablodur. Saldırı sırasında 1.600 kişi hayatını kaybetmiş, çok daha fazla sayıda kişi de yaralanmıştı.
Resim Bask milliyetçiliğinin de sembollerinden biridir, şu anda Madrid’deki Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía müzesinde gösterilmektedir.
Söylentiye göre bir Nazi subayı, 2.Dünya Savaşı sırasında Alman işgali altında bulunan Paris’teki ressamın evinde Guernica’nın fotoğrafını görünce, “Bunu siz mi yaptınız?” diye sorar ve Picasso’dan “Hayır, siz yaptınız.” cevabını alır.
