Robyn Davidson & Tracks

Robyn Davidson is an Australian writer best known for her book Tracks, about her 1,700 mile trek across the deserts of west Australia using camels. In 1975, Davidson moved to Alice Springs in an effort to work with camels for a desert trek she was planning. For two years she trained camels and learned how to survive in the harsh desert. She was peripherally involved in the Aboriginal Land Rights movement.

Davidson set off from Alice Springs for the west coast, with a dog and four camels. She had no intention of writing about the journey, but eventually agreed to write an article for National Geographic Magazine. Having met the photographer Rick Smolan in Alice Springs, she insisted that he be the photographer for the journey.

Smolan and Davidson had a romantic relationship during the trip, drove out to meet her three times during the nine-month journey. The National Geographic article was published in 1978 and attracted so much interest that Davidson decided to write a book about the experience. In 2013 Tracks movie has been released based on Robyn Davidson memories and her book.

Davidson said she felt the trip work magic on her in strange and unexpected ways. “When there is no one to remind you what society’s rules are, and there is nothing to keep you linked to that society, you had better be prepared for some startling changes.”

Robyn Davidson Avusturalyalı bir yazar, en bilindik kitabı ise kendi tecrübesini anlattığı İzler adlı kitabı. Davidson 1700 mil mesafelik Avusturalya çölünü develeri kullanarak geçiyor. 1975 yılında develeri nasıl eğiteceğini ve doğada zorlu yaşam şartları öğrenerek başladığı macerasında ilham verici birçok konu var.

İlk başta bu yolculuğunu yazmak için bir girişimi olmasa da daha sonra macerasının National Geographic tarafından yayınlanmasına ikna oluyor. National Geographic dergisi için fotoğrafları çeken Rick Smolan ile duygusal bir ilişki de kuran Davidson’ı fotoğraflamak için 9 ay boyunca üç kere yanına geliyor Smolan.

1978'de National Geographic’in hikayesini basmasından sonra oldukça ilgi gördüğünü fark eden Davidson yaşadıklarını kitaplaştırmaya karar veriyor. 2013 yılında Davidson’ın anılarına ve kitabına dayanarak Çöldeki İzler filmi çekiliyor.

Davidson’ın yaptığı yolcuya dair düşüncelerini şu şekilde ifade ediyor: “Size toplum kurallarını hatırlatacak kimse olmayınca, sizi de topluma bağlayan hiçbir şey kalmıyor ve böylece şaşırtıcı değişimlere çok daha hazırlıklı oluyorsunuz.”
