Sistine Chapel Ceiling / Sistine Şapeli Tavanı
In 1503, a new pope, Julius II, decided to change some of the Sistine Chapel’s decoration. He commanded artist Michelangelo to do it. Michelangelo balked, because he considered himself a sculptor, not a painter, and also he was occupied with a very large sculptural commission for the king’s tomb. But Pope Julius insisted, and Michelangelo began work on his famous frescoed ceiling in 1508. He worked for four years. It was so physically taxing that it permanently damaged his eyesight.
At the highest part of the ceiling, Michelangelo depicted nine scenes from Genesis, including “The Separation of Light From Darkness” at the altar end of the chapel to “The Drunkenness of Noah” at the other end. The most famous panels are “The Creation of Adam” and “The Fall of Man and the Expulsion from Paradise.”
He wrote a poem to describe his misery during 4 years:
“My loins into my paunch like levers grind. My buttock like a crupper bears my weight. My feet unguided wander to and fro”…

1503 yılında yeni Papa 2. Julius Sistine Şapeli’nin dekorunda değişiklik yapmak istiyor. Bu görev içinde ünlü heykeltıraş Michelangelo’yu seçiyor fakat Michelangelo bu işi kabul etmek istemiyor çünkü Michelangelo kendini bir heykeltıraş olarak görüyor ressam olarak değil. Buna ek olarak o dönemde kralın mezar taşı için çalışmaktaydı. Fakat Papa Michelangelo’ya hiçbir şans tanımayıp onu çalışmaya ikna ediyor. 1508 yılında başlayan zorlu dekorasyon 1512 yılında son buluyor ve aynı zamanda Michelangelo’ya başta görme problemleri olarak ciddi fiziksel sıkıntılara yol açıyor.
Michelangelo tarafından hazırlanan tavanın dekorasyonunun merkezinde İncil’in tekvin (Yaratılış) kitabından 9 değişik tablo kompozisyonu bulunmaktadır. Bunlar arasında en çok tanınmışı Adem’in Yaratılışı tablosu olup beyaz giysiler içinde meleklerle çevrili Tanrının Ademin parmağına dokunup onu yaratmasını göstermektedir.
