“I Don’t Want To Buy Online” Part 2

Why many customers give up on shopping online

In the previous articles, we began to go through the problems that people may encounter when shopping online. Receiving something you didn’t order is bad on its own; but sometimes you receive nothing at all — and that’s what we are going to discuss in this article.

So, where is my order?

One week, two weeks, more weeks pass, yet the item you bought from a small online store is still on its way to you (probably). Many customers are afraid to end up in an unpleasant situation where they pay and have to wait a very long time for their purchase — which might end up not arriving to you at all. This problem is entirely nonexistent when you buy something from real-life stores — which is why many customers decide to buy what they want the usual way.

So, what are their fears?

· The item might take too long to arrive, with no way to calculate the actual delivery time: particularly troubling issue when you order something to a certain date, like a gift on your mother’s birthday or a hiking backpack for your upcoming vacation;

· The item might not arrive at all, with no refund possible: that can be the case when you order at the maker’s self-made online store with no guarantees attached — and it may end up being just a scam altogether;

· The item might not arrive at all, and the refund (while possible) might take too long: big companies make refunds quick and easy for the customer, but even then the money may take quite a lot of time to return to your account — after all, the refund process entirely depends on the financial intermediaries involved in the transaction.

There are a lot of cases when these three problems intersect, well-documented online by the customers:

“I told them it was important for me to receive the gift by September 5, and they told me the payment will get processed and the item will get shipped to me in a week and there’s no reason to worry. It’s been over three weeks since then, and the payment still didn’t get processed. I’ve been calling them for the fourth time now. I don’t need the thing I ordered with them anymore, but when I told them I want to cancel the order and get a refund they told me it can’t be done”[1]

A very unpleasant situation you don’t ever want to experience, don’t you agree? And indeed, such online shopping stories paint the whole experience in a bad light.
