If the European train travel experience is what you’re used to, just remember that in Europe, traveling “cross-country” is no big deal. You’re done in hours or maybe a day. Imagine the horror of coach class travel across the Trans-Siberian railroad, or across the Indian subcontinent. I’ve been on a 12-hour ride in China where I got to sleep for a few hours on a thin mattress and took a squat-dump (three, actually) through a hole in the floor while balancing myself like a catcher in an earthquake. Interesting. China’s building mag-levs like crazy, so my next train ride in China will be a breeze.
