What comes after nations? I don’t think it will be social networks. At least not as we know them. What’s becoming clear is that online networks lead to even worse tribalization than nation-states. In a nation, you have to deal with and hear people you disagree with. Online, you can see what you want to see. Facebook is even kind enough to filter out all the people who say things that don’t interest you or that you disagree with. So many people were shocked that real people they knew voted for the other candidate. Well, no wonder. They never saw those posts from their friends they disagreed with. They probably never even realized that they disagreed with their friends or family members in the first place because the Web had managed their reality so carefully.
