Digital Bystander Intervention Strategies for Long-Term Care Facility Livestreams
Livestreams being cheaply accessible only became so in the late 2000s to mid-2010s.
Some research on livestreams (& surveillance) in the last two decades focused on:
- The impact that being monitored has on employees via electronic performance monitoring
- livestream culture’s impact on young/middle-aged audiences
- as well as the psychological effects of physically and digitally witnessing world events on social media, while having little to no options/obligations to intervene.
The Twitch community which witnessed Roger Faulkner’s last moments from his long term care facility room on June 14th wishes they had been been able to do more than just call the facility and alert the family.
As monitoring capabilities are being authorized in more places, innovation which allows for better intervention; while protecting the audience from exposure to graphic content is essential to re-shaping social media’s role in our lives.
Current Tools
Windows PC
Running Two instances of OBS allows one program instance to capture everything as it happens (Start Recording) while the live-streaming instance is safely rerouted to a privacy screen.
- OBS/Twitchat (plug-n-play web-based stream manager, tutorial otw)
Apple PC
- OBS/Twitchat tutorial otw, scene commands triggers/link to OBS built-in and painfully easy!)
Android Phone
- IRL Pro (Tutorial otw, streamer toggled privacy overlay)
Apple Phone (iOS)
- Live Now (streamer-toggled privacy overlay, Tutorial otw)
- Prism Live (streamer toggled Screen Swap/Mute functionality)
More mobile solutions are being discovered, any help to compile these systems would be greatly appreciated.
