For more than 30 years, the Toyota 4Runner has been a popular choice among drivers on (and off) the road. This versatile SUV stays with the times, getting yearly updates to become more drivable, more efficient, more adventurous — more 4Runner.

Since 1984, the 4Runner has been built for drivers who love to drive. It was (and continues to be) built at Toyota’s Tahara Plant in Tahara, Japan. The naming of the 4Runner is very intentional, outlining exactly what this vehicle is, no matter the model year: “4-wheel drive” and “off-road Runner.”

It started out, essentially, as a pickup truck with a covered rear cargo area. Over the years, the 4Runner has become less rugged and more refined. In 2016, it has a sleek design and sculpted exterior: some might say it’s even bordering on classy.

Relive your favorite 4Runner memories with these snapshots taken through 5 generations of Toyota’s most recognizable SUV.

Up For Anything: 5 Generations of The Toyota 4Runner

First Generation

The first generation of the Toyota 4Runner launched late in the 1984 model year and lasted through 1989.

With only two doors and a removable hardtop cargo shell, the first 4Runner was a lot more truck than we’re used to seeing in a contemporary SUV. There were two models available: one was extremely utilitarian, meant for holding and transporting cargo. The other held five passengers, and had the option of a more luxurious interior and larger fuel tank.

Both the passenger and utility model were powered by an inline 4-cylinder engine and a 5-speed manual transmission.

Through the end of the first generation, the 4Runner saw changes that brought powerful engine options, increased responsiveness and sturdier design elements.

Second Generation

The second generation brought big changes in the 1990 model, starting with the option of 2-door and 4-door models with 2WD and 4WD options. This generation continues through the 1995 model year.

Additional changes to the generation-leading 1990 4Runner include:

  • Steel body rear cover replaces the removable rear roof
  • Ride comfort improves with interior trim updates
  • Equipped with A340F Automatic Transmission
  • Rear-Wheel Anti-Lock brake system becomes available
  • In Canada, Daytime Running Light System becomes an option

While 2-door models were discontinued in this era, the 4Runner saw a renewed focus on body additions and engine efficiency.

Third Generation

1996 Toyota 4Runner

The introduction of the third-generation 4Runner came in 1996 and boasted new engines, chassis, interior and exterior styling, more safety equipment, and extended utility. This complete overhaul includes all of the following changes:

  • Refined, well-appointed interior
  • 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission options
  • New V6 engine with double-overhead cam 4-valve design
  • Improved steering feel and response
  • Additional features in steering column and instrument panel
  • Adjustable, fabric bucket seats

And more. These changes were upheld and expanded on in model years 1997–2002, through the end of the third generation.

Fourth Generation

The fourth generation 4Runner debuted in 2003 as an all new model for U.S., Japan, and Export markets. The new generation no longer shares a lifeline with the Tacoma truck line, though it remains on frame construction.

Changes in the 2003 4Runner include a V8 engine option that will produce 235 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. of torque, bigger dimensions and three distinct trim levels. The 2003 model also offers better fuel economy and many equipment options not available in previous generations.

In 2006, the 4Runner got a bold makeover with a new grille, bumper, headlamps, and fog lamps, elevating the style and sophistication of this Toyota SUV.

Fifth Generation

The fifth and current generation of the 4Runner saw a return to the vehicle’s sporty roots and appeal to the spirited driver. Many changes in the 2010–2016 models revolved around the incorporation of new technology throughout the vehicle.

2016 Toyota 4Runner

The 2017 4Runner will be available in two new grades: TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium. Drivers will enjoy the innovation of Toyota Racing Development (TRD) in these vehicles, plus the same interior comforts 4Runner enthusiasts have come to expect from the SUV.
