Frankly, I think he’s completely wrong; not sure if you’ll see my response to him if I don’t ‘ping’ you here. The problem you document can’t be fixed with more code; that’s the exact attitude that creates the problem you’ve documented so well here.

As a now former dev finishing up his last project (I sold two books & am transitioning to full-time writing), I can not agree more with your essay, and I think the absolute least effective way to fix it is to keep writing more code/contributing to projects. The only way to fix it is to change perspectives… which I think your essay is a good step towards doing.
