Why Support a Site Contradicting All You Stand For?

The Mystery of Support for X

I don’t know about you, but I’m more than happy to support sites that show concern for the truth, for justice, for a fair society, for environmental issues and, basically, any organisation that’s fundamentally good. I share their output wherever I can.

What puzzles me, however, is why many of these altruistic sites continue to use the reputedly divisive and extreme X site to promote their message. I’m in the UK, but some of these caring sites I support have a worldwide presence. Are they unaware of the seeming lack of concern shown for the truth, the apparent promotion, through algorithms, of extreme, violent, misogynist, science-denying, utterly unbalanced comments on this place that was once called ‘Twitter’? All apparently done in the name of ‘free speech’. But we all know there’s a real difference between encouraging people to speak their minds, and promoting those willing to spread lies, division, disinformation, misinformation, hatred, misogyny, and racism, etc.

I had a reasonable following (25k) on the old site, but left soon after the platform changed hands so it now seems the most outrageous, divisive, implausible, and extreme views gain most attention. Clearly the algorithms must now cause this precise effect. Attention brings more traffic. More…
