The Road Isn’t Straight — So What??!

The road to your goal is probably not going to be straight. Don’t be stressed if you get started and you find the target getting smaller. (I’m not talking about changing your target, but rather you feel that initially it’s seeming further away.) I think about old testament Moses, who’s goal was to lead the Jewish people out of Egypt to their promised land, (east) and he started off… going west.

Have you ever tried selling a product or service to people without social media or email? If you haven’t, consider for a moment how it works. You have something you want to sell, or get in the hands of as many people as possible. (lemonade, an app, a cleaning service, a whatever) You can be as revved up to go as you want, you know the features, advantages, benefits, you understand why a person would want to buy it, what problem it solves — you are ready to go. The problem: You actually have very few people to pitch your idea to. Your pipeline is weak!

So how do you solve the problem? It’s not rocket science, you have to build a list. List building sucks. I get distracted, bored and it definitely feels like I am going away from my target rather than towards it. I have to figure out my audience, I have to find out who the person is some how find a number, an address, I may have to call someone. Then I have to log their detail in a CRM, tag each contact correctly, etc etc etc… Pretty soon I’m falling asleep instead of being pumped about my goal. But the reality is that this a necessary step towards making your vision become a reality.

Regardless of the direction you are going today (which may seem backwards!) what is important is that you have the right mindset and the right information to ultimately take you there. Today is about mindset.

Persist. You must persist through everything. Yes, the path may seem to take you away from your goal. Yes, there will be setbacks. Yes, things will be unfair. Yes, things will be difficult. Whatever the disillusion or challenge, you need to have already decided in your mind that you will continue.

That doesn’t mean you don’t step back and reevaluate. It doesn’t mean that you don’t make tactical or strategic changes. But you certainly don’t stop. You don’t quit. Make a decision to persist and you will immediately become more productive.
