Let’s look at it a different way.

I play field hockey. I spend $550 a year on fee’s, probably another $400–500 on equipment every 1–2 years, countless dollars on fuel and time.

Would I give it up because I not only made no money but actually lose money year on year? Fuck no. Do I enjoy it? Yes, I love it.

The question shouldn’t be anything about whether you made money on it. Fuck money. Do you enjoy doing it? Does it give you a sense of enjoyment or accomplishment?

I think your last point is the best. Stop thinking about money. If a project interests you, makes your life easier and was fun to do. It’s successful!

I am very similar to you in that I constantly have new ideas and build new stuff (most web based).

We are surrounded by the idea that if you are going to spend time on it, you should make money on it. Bullshit.

Time != Money . (if you’re not a coder…does not equal)

I think you keep going. Keep building. If nothing else you will give your son the greatest gift you ever could. You’ll give him the lesson that you should commit to projects and follow through, regardless on financial gain. You’ll show him that life is about what you enjoy doing, not what your bank statement says.
