I fucking love those gridlines!
Okay, maybe that’s a bit of an overstatement. But honestly, I do think they add to the aesthetics when used right.
I agree that in the vast majority of cases they don’t contribute to the functionality of the site, and it goes without saying that if they clutter the interface and subtract from the usability of the site, they should be considered a crime against UX. I love minimalism just as much as the next guy — and maybe even more(!) — but hey, if they add value simply by looking good, and don’t disturb or confuse the visitor on the site, I say: bring on the gridlines! ;)
