Increasingly more students are choosing for ‘Dual Learning’: “We help prepare them for their first job.”
To learn and get a degree, college students no longer need to sit behind school desks for multiple hours a day, over the course of several years. Since 2022, Studio Hyperdrive has therefore offered students of ‘Erasmus Brussels University of Applied Sciences and Arts’ to opt for Dual Learning. This way, college students can combine regular classroom learning with one week of on-the-job learning, all neatly divided. Amongst many other things, this gives them a chance to try, learn, and get an immediate head start in the workplace. All thanks to gaining substantial work experience.
The testing grounds of EhB:
Do you wish to be a front-end developer? Or is back-end development something more for you? Would you like to learn more about User Interface Design? Or do you rather like everything about User Experience Design? There are just so many Dual Learning opportunities that EhB is making available to its students. For this school year, the university is once again collaborating with many businesses like ‘Studio Hyperdrive’, to further enable Dual Learning within the digital sector.
And to great effect, it seems. Because increasingly more students are choosing for Dual Learning at EhB. Last school year alone, there was a 200 percent increase compared to the pupils of the previous school year. According to figures from Mike Derycke, lecturer in the bachelor “Multimedia & Creative Technologies” at EhB.
The success formula of Dual Learning:
“The digital sector is subject to a rapidly changing world, in which new technologies appear so quickly that they are better taught by businesses, than by teachers who are not able to keep up with every possible trend.
This makes total sense, as students who choose for the Dual Learning course are often taught by experienced professionals, who have mastered their profession and are constantly keeping up with the latest and most innovative trends.”, says Mike Derycke of EhB.
“In addition to this, the course offers many students a first introduction to what life is really like in the workplace. They not only get a realistic picture of the job they would like to perform but also gain practical work experience whilst doing so. Furthermore, it gives them the necessary insights to make well-founded decisions about continuing their studies or choosing their first job. After all, they get a good idea of the job and can practice their talents, interests, and work attitude in a professional environment. That is immediately a big plus for later, as many of our past interns evolved into practicing their very first job with us.”, says Iben Van de Veire, developer and head of Dual Learning at Studio Hyperdrive.
Providing more quality in the workplace:
When students choose for Dual Learning, they will naturally spend more time in a professional setting. A good match between student and workplace is therefore essential. So, to accomplish this, EhB has recognized many businesses like Studio Hyperdrive as quality workplaces, where students are able to learn professional competencies and practical skills, to help prepare them for their first job.
According to Mike Derycke, this is an additional effect that is clearly visible at Studio Hyperdrive. Because through Dual Learning, the company is namely able to help support students who already have a certain foundation but are not yet ready to be employed. As a result, not only students but also businesses are empowered to get started with Dual Learning.
