Honestly, as a consumer, I’m all for advancing this technology. To me, the line is where the line always has been… you have to get permission. Whether it’s from the person being recreated digitally or from their estate (power of attorney, what have you). Also, after permission, there must be some form of remuneration. If you’ve met these two criteria to the appeasement of the party being represented, then go to town.

But, there is also another line to consider, and that is audience reception. If the job is done poorly, and the audience is dissatisfied, that will hurt the property.

Also, if it’s done poorly, the estate may come back and sue the production for damaging the person’s brand(?) (struggling with this word here).

So, there are lots of things to consider before this technology really takes off, but come on… who wouldn’t like to see another Elvis movie?
