Best commentaries on 2 Peter

Don’t miss the WTJ vol 49 article by Al Wolters on 2 Peter 3.10, where some modern editions unnecessarily resort to conjectural emendation. I used Davids (Pillar) because I had it as my main technical one. I suspect Gene Green (BECNT) would have been better — would have tried it if I didn’t already have Davids. Matthew Harmon (ESVEC) is worth looking at. Older commentaries by the Covenanters Alexander Nisbet and David Dickson worth checking out

Best commentaries on Joseph

Kidner, Graaf, Voddie Baucham, Steinmann. The Duguid and Harmon collaboration ‘The Gospel According to Joseph’ is ok. Not as good as others in the series eg Duguid by himself on Abraham or Isaac. I’ve pretty much given up on Currid. He’s decent, but tedious and long-winded. …

Best Commentaries on Ezra-Nehemiah

(Grouping them together as nearly all the commentaries cover both books, which most commentators argue were originally one book, though Steinmann disagrees) TLDR: My top 4 are: Kidner, DRD, McConville, Steinmann. Allen if I need a fifth. Found him particularly helpful in places. I accidentally used the Mentor one once, which…

Best commentaries on Isaac and Jacob

Previous Genesis commentary recommendations can be found below: 1–3 4–11 Abraham I’m basically reading Graaf, Kidner and Steinmann — and skimming Currid. I seem to have forgotten about Duguid for most of the series, but when I remember about him I’ve found him very good. Vos has a bit. Don’t think I read him on Abraham. Belcher now available in Logos but think I’ve enough commentaries. Allen Ross has a series in Bibliotheca Sacra (starting in vol 142) on ‘Studies in the Life of Jacob’.

What to read before preaching a book

The stuff that ideally you would be reading weeks or even months ahead of time, but it doesn’t always work out that way: The book itself! No substitute for repeated reading. I normally end up preaching a book after reading it in my devotions and thinking ‘I need to preach…

Best Commentaries on the Attributes of God

Definitely appreciated the extra prep time preaching on the (communicable) attributes during lockdown. Charnock is the obvious one. At the start I thought it was so long I’d just try to give it a very quick skim. But he’s so good. But still, so long! Ideally one to read prior…

What I used and found helpful Daily Dose of Hebrew Webb Five Festal Garments Biblical-Theological Intro to the OT chapter by Yeo NAC Block Currid: Good, apart from this clanger: “So, is Boaz a type of Christ? Probably not” 🙈 De Graaf is worth looking at as always. Sinclair Ferguson…

Best commentaries on 2 Samuel

I’ve previously shared my commentary recommendations on 1 Samuel. With 2 Samuel, it’s largely more of the same. However I’m probably using fewer commentaries. Every week: Dale Ralph Davis John L. Mackay (new — ESV Expository Commentary) Reformation Commentary on Scripture David Firth Tim Chester [De Graaf. …

Best Commentaries on Romans 8

I’m just about to preach my 14th and final sermon on the chapter — really enjoyed taking it more slowly than I normally would. Great video to set the context: Sinclair Ferguson — Romans in 40 mins Also good for context: This way to godliness: the message of Romans…

Best commentaries on Jude

Here are some preliminary thoughts as I prefer to preach on v24 as part of a series on ‘He is able’. Manton: Brilliant! Perkins: Manton thinks he gets it wrong by seeing it as all about Roman Catholicism. Spurgeon doesn’t seem to be a fan of his commentaries either —…
