NEPALI MOUNTAINS/MY FRIEND BRIGIT

Why education matters?

story of an improbable journey from Nepal’s mountain village to Harvard!

I want to tell you my story. Not because it is special but because it demonstrates a profound implication of educating a child.

My undated childhood photo, taken by a Save the Children, USA volunteer in my village when I was 4-5 years old. This is the only picture of my childhood. My father had just started working as a teacher for a monthly salary of 25 cents. My mother told me she used wooden ashes to wash my clothes. We simply did not have money to buy soaps.
I was one of the 32 lucky kids to be selected, after a rigorous entrance exam, from all over Nepal to study at Budhanilkantha School, the country’s elite boarding school in Kathmandu.
Fast forward to 2010. I graduated from St. Olaf College, becoming the first member from my family to ever go to college.I then decide to return to my village.
I built Nepal’s first peace school for war affected children in my hometown in 2011. The school now has more than 200 children.
