LYNX — Vault 1

For the past decade, Lynx has been a leading figure in drum & bass circles both with his own productions (most notably the absolute smash Disco Dodo as well as the the I Am Lynx LP released on Hospital Records as releases on Digital Soundboy and soul:r) and his work with Kemo (the Raw Truth album especially) and has been a producer who constantly varies his sound and keeps it both fresh and exciting. Now having left Hospital and concentrating on his own record label Detail Recordings, Lynx has raided his archives to bring us Vault 1 (with more volumes upcoming), a collection of unreleased vibrant music from the past ten years and what stays the same is the quality of music that Lynx puts out.

What strikes you when listening to Vault 1 is that how good it is and the fact that they shouldn’t have been unreleased for so long! The collection starts with 2nd Floor (featuring Kemo and DRS) , a track that starts with an atmospheric intro before DRS starts spitting as only he can and the track transforms into a grooving monster of a tune with DRS and Kemo bringing the truth with their lyrics throughout and demonstrating their skills tremendously.
This great start is only built in throughout Vault 1 with the variation of different styles continuing to impress. From the techy Ruffneck Sound and Elextronix, the joyous Keep Going Back, the uplifting Giving In (which feature vocalist Spoonface) and the rave indebted Professor to the self explanatory Amen Workout (featuring Zero One), the laid back but focussed anthemic groove of closing track Out Of Control (with the vocals of Tali), and the brooding Still, there is something for everyone on here. The two forward thinking tracks that Lynx does with Hellrazor (In My Dreams and Steptoe) are also of note and tracks that Mark Hellrazor out as one to watch in the future.
The standout track on Vault 1 has to be the sublime Calibre collaboration Voyager. An upbeat rolling tune over a dreamlike soundscape that highlights the best parts of both the Lynx and Calibre production styles. The track is simply superb and so effective.
Vault 1 shows what why Lynx is regarded as such a talented drum & bass producer and both then second volume of unreleased tracks Vault 2 and a new album from him will be releases to look forward to, indulged and enjoyed. A fantastic and eclectic collection of tracks.
