15 Home Remedies To Get Rid Of Hiccups?

We’ve all had hiccups, but do you know what causes them? Hiccups are the strange little sounds that might come out of our mouths without warning.

On the other hand, it begins considerably lower in our body, in the diaphragm, the dome-shaped muscle between our lungs and stomach. When we inhale, the diaphragm pulls down to let air into our lungs, and when we exhale, it relaxes to allow air to flow back out of our lungs and out our nose and mouth.

If our diaphragm is irritated, it can spasm, forcing us to suck air into our throat, where it hits our voice box. It causes our vocal cords to close immediately, producing the distinct “hic!” sound.

How to get rid of hiccups?

Experts say, most of the time, hiccups will go away within several minutes. Treating any underlying issues that produce hiccups may help minimize their frequency.

There are a few home remedies we can try, but there isn’t much evidence that any of them work:

  1. Hold your breath for 3 seconds, then swallow three times.
  2. Breathe into a paper bag, but stop before you become dizzy!
  3. Drink a glass of water
  4. Pull your tongue out.
  5. Gargle with water, taking slow, deep breaths.
  6. Water to drink or ice water
  7. Allowing someone or something to frighten you
  8. squeezing a lemon
  9. 5–10 seconds of holding your breath
  10. Inflating a balloon
  11. For one minute, sit down and bring your knees to your chest.
  12. Applying a cool compress to your face
  13. Attempt to cup your hands over your nose and mouth while breathing normally. The additional carbon dioxide should help you get rid of the hiccups.
  14. A tablespoon of sugar is a common hiccup remedy because its graininess may irritate the esophagus, prompting the phrenic nerves to “reset.”
  15. Try pushing your palm with the thumb of your other hand — the firm, the better.
