Probably you might have received a new badge on GitHub called Arctic Code Vault Contributor with a notification as below.

What is the purpose of this badge, and why were you received that? Let’s find that out. Yh, GitHub recently launched a project called GitHub Archive Program along with the GitHub Arctic Code Vault, which was introduced at GitHub Universe 2019. The major purpose of this project is to conserve the open-source contribution for future generations by storing them in an archive built and saving it for a thousand years.

According to the GitHub, they have taken a copy of all the active open-source repositories (February 2, 2020) on their system to archive in the vault. GitHub made a partnership with Piql, which provides data security and ensures long-term access and readability for digital data. Piql wrote nearly 21TB of data to 186 reels of piqlFilm 😲.

Because of the global pandemic situation, GitHub had to adjust some of their initial deploy plans. Anyhow on July 8, 2020, GitHub was able to deposit the Arctic Code Vault at Svalbard (Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean). The transporting of the repository data began in the Piql’s facility in Drammen, Norway. All the piqlFilm reels were shipped to Oslo Airport and sent them to Longyearbyen, which is a small town in Svalbard using a passenger plane. Then the data boxes were transferred to the decommissioned coal mine set in the mountain ⛏️, and then to a chamber deep inside hundreds of meters of permafrost and stored those data of active open-source repositories.

So, What is Arctic Code Vault Badge 🤔? Yh, as mentioned above, now the open-source repositories are stored in the Arctic Code Vault. Therefore in order to identify the repositories’ contributors, they have received the Arctic Code Vault Badge on their GitHub profile highlights section 😎.

I hope that now you have an idea about the GitHub Archive Program and Arctic Code Vault Badge. Thank you for reading 💜.
