Indian Baba Sector boom
Indian Baba Sector has come a long way. Today, Indian Babas have made their presence felt all over the world. The Babas dance, sing bhajans, inhale, exhale in rhythm, perform yoga and give discourses on religious topics to build huge Babadom across the world.
More than 30 Indian babas have already established their kingdom across Western and European countries. Among them Dalai Lama, Jiddu Krishnamurthy, Maharshi Mahesh Yogi, Meher Baba, Swami Muktananda, Swami Paramhansa, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Swami Prabhupada, Bhagwan Osho, Satya Sai Baba and many others have established their spiritual empire abroad. Sri Satya Sai Baba who preached Advaita Vedanta, established 1200 centers in 130 countries with more than 6 million adherents across the world. Similarly, Sri Sri Ravishankar has established more than 160 Art of Living centres in different countries. The popularity of Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev is soaring as millions of people from India, Africa, USA and from European countries do his breathing exercises daily. New York Time called Baba Ramdev an Indian who built Yoga Empire. Devotees are donating cash, land and even island to Baba Ramdev in exchange of peace and happiness. Baba Ramdev has not only established a yoga empire but has also expanded his business empire. Patanjali Ayurveda Limited’s revenue gain is Rs 10,000 crore as on 30 May 2017. It has become the second largest consumer goods company surpassing ITC, Nestle, Godrej, Dabur and Tata. If Baba Ramdev maintains quality of his products, he could spread his empire overseas. In the process his products may replace his yogic exercises and pranayama he teaches. Baba Ramdev cuts short his yoga time to act in Ad films to market his products. There is nothing wrong in doing business as long as the products are pure and reasonably priced.
The growing baba cult attracts Politicians who frequently visit mystic babas for some super natural backup and for votes. All human associations are carefully assessed by politicians and treated as vote banks. Almost all Indian Prime Ministers have visited Satya Sai Baba for his blessings and for the support of his millions of followers. In the 80s, politicians queued up to have the blessings of Devraha Baba who lived on the bank of the Yamuna river. The Baba always put his feet on politicians’ heads as his blessings. Nobody knew why he used his legs. Contractors, middlemen, traders and corrupt babus come in large number for baba’s blessings. Indian babas give their blessings to all.
The phenomenal baba sector boom attributes to the failure of
different economic models to generate employment, growing social tension, aggressive materialism, increase in new diseases, high cost of treatment and stress. People feel the babas hold the key for all solution. Many babas promise to give everything: wealth, jobs, bride, groom, happiness and baby etc. Poverty and backwardness also contribute to baba sector growth. Illiterate people in distress resort to Babas for solution. If a poor person falls sick and donot have money for long treatment he goes to babas expecting a cure. In many places spurious babas exploit innocent people. Recently a few babas in Odisha were arrested for fraud, sex racket and for heinous crimes. But their influence is so strong that they openly tell people that nobody could convict them. There are also instances of good Sadhu babas who work silently for people. Like any other sectors, baba sector has its own problems and prospects. The government has to find a mechanism to monitor baba sector.
India can produce more babas to meet the global demand. The NDA government should establish an university to groom young babas. Young Indian babas can learn information technology, management skill and accountancy to manage the Babadom. For baba career, one has to develop the skill of listening to people and acquire knowledge on different religious scriptures. One has to master the skill of sitting in one place for a long time, eating vegetarian food preferably fruit juice, avoid intoxicants in public, master the abhaya mudra, develop patience to close eyes for a long time and open it with a smile. Babas need to develop a good chela-base in all sections of the society.
The potential of baba sector growth in West and European countries is very high. Economic slowdown, failure of their economic models to create jobs, excess stress and loss of social life create perfect set up for Indian babas to thrive. Indian babas distribute their best product- the way to happiness. People in developed countries are honest, disciplined and pursue thing to its logical end. The growing baba empire will trigger remittance economy. Large number of chelas will follow their Gurus to developed nations and find business opportunities. This is high time for the Indian babas to live up to the expectation of people.
