Elon Musk’s Secret to Happiness

Is there anything Elon Musk can’t do. The guy is a world changing machine, I mean the guy is landing rockets on freaking boats! Oh yeah and at the same time he is racking up the most pre-sale reservations for an automobile ever. He seems to be unstoppable and a never ending source of inspiration as a titan of industry when all the unicorns are chasing the internet payday dream and not building tangible goods.

If it sounds like I have a little Musk obsession it would not be too far from the truth. He is an inspiration to me (maybe a tad more) because he is pushing the envelop is so many ways. The downside of looking up to a person like Musk is that you can get a little down on yourself because you’re not achieving the things he is. Anyone’s life pales in comparison. If it is happiness that you are after then it would make sense to ask what is it that makes Musk happy.

Is it the long list of accomplishments?

Is the the stacks of cash?

Perhaps the celebrity status?

Answer is…his children. In a recent interview Elon Musk is quoted in saying his children make him the happiest of anything.

“Of anything in my life, my kids, by far, make me the happiest” — Elon Musk

Quite a statement from anyone much less an extremely “accomplished” guy like Musk. For me it helps me to question my own pursuit of happiness in the things I do and the “accomplishments” that I check off. In the end do those things satisfy and more importantly do they come at the expense of my family? It has been stated that happiness is the result of making progress toward a goal and not so much the goal itself. I would agree with that, but I would also agree with Musk. Family is a more genuine source of happiness.

I host a podcast about fatherhood where I interview entrepreneurs to talk about this very subject of building companies while starting a family. Check it out at www.2centdad.com/podcast
