User Research has a lot in common with Behavioral Research — observing human behavior. The problem I think, lies in the methods and the conclusions. You’re right, a lot of confounding factors are not addressed in usability testing and I think it is because many usability tests are not designed as experiments and that is because these “tests” are set out to try and measure too many things at once.
