Nestled in the heart of Bali lies the magnificent Lake Batur. This volcanic lake is located at the foot of Mount Batur and is one of the largest lakes in Bali. It is a popular tourist attraction, with visitors coming to enjoy its breathtaking views and the variety of water activities it offers, such as fishing, boating, and camping.

However, in recent years, the lake has become plagued with environmental problems, particularly pollution. The once crystal-clear waters of the lake are now murky and foul-smelling, making it unsuitable for swimming or any recreational activities.

In the past, Lake Batur was a pristine and healthy ecosystem, providing clean water for local communities and supporting a thriving fish population. The water was so clear that it was used for bathing and even drinking. But over the years, the lake has been subjected to human activities such as farming and fishing, which have resulted in the deterioration of its water quality.

The most significant source of pollution in Lake Batur is the excessive use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers in agriculture. These chemicals leach into the soil and eventually find their way into the lake, causing a buildup of harmful pollutants. In addition, the fish farming industry around the lake also contributes to the pollution, as the fish feed and waste products contaminate the water.

The negative impact of this pollution on the lake’s ecosystem has been severe, with a noticeable decline in the fish population and an increase in algae growth. The once clear water has turned green and is now filled with debris, making it impossible to see the bottom. Furthermore, the lake’s water quality has declined to the point where it’s no longer safe for human consumption or recreational activities.
