FirstWord: We’ve made it quick and convenient for to understand the terms in Short time. As We(VFX Artists) all know about these, just I am recollecting.
What is meant be Effect.?
Effect :- Change which is a result or consequence of an action or other. Effects, Movies have never existed without effects. In fact, you could sum up cinema as one big, giant effect.
Types of Effects:-
1. Special Effects(SFX, SPFX)
i. Mechanical Effects
ii. Optical Effects
2. Visual Effects (VFX)
3. Live Special Effects
SPECIAL EFFECTS(SFX, SPFX) :- These are the illusions or visual tricks used in the film, television, Theatre, to simulate the imagined events in a story or virtual world. Literally any specially designed/rigged physical object that generates an effect comes under the Special Effects category.
e.g. props, guns that fire blanks, dummy hollowed out cars rigged to explode, blood squibs, plywood facades of houses rigged to burn, plywood audience standees for stadium scenes, liquid latex for zombie makeup, etc.
i. Mechanical effects :- (also called practical or physical effects) are usually accomplished during the live-action shooting. This includes the use of mechanized props, scenery, scale models, animatronics, pyrotechnics and

a) Atmospheric effects:- Creating physical wind, rain, fog, snow, clouds, making a car appear to drive by itself and blowing up a building, etc.
ii. Optical effects :- (also called photographic effects) are techniques in which images or film frames are created photographically, either “in-camera” using multiple exposure, mattes or the Schüfftan process or in post-production using an optical printer. An optical effect might be used to place actors or sets against a different background.
As computer-generated imagery (CGI) has come to the forefront of special effects technologies. It gives filmmakers greater control, and allows many effects to be more safely and convincingly at lower costs. As a result, many optical and mechanical effects techniques have been superseded by CGI.
VISUAL EFFECTS : — (VFX) are done on computer software, meaning it wasn’t shot with the principal cinematography, and is added in post production.
Greenscreen and wirework are a type of pre-VFX, because they are shot live, then the greenscreen background is inserted digitally in post, and the wires are removed digitally.
Visual effects primarily divides into two groups of:
i. Visual Special effects
ii. Digital effects
i. Visual Special effects: It covers any visual effects that take place in live action, e.g. on set explosions or stunt performances.
ii. Digital effects (commonly shortened to digital FX or FX): It covers the various processes by which imagery is created or manipulated, this involve the integration of still photography and computer-generated imagery (CGI) to create environments which look realistic but would be dangerous, costly, or impossible to capture in camera.
Digital FX divides into mainly subgroups of professions such as
a. Matte paintings and stills:
b. Motion capture (or Mo-Cap):
c. Modelling(Texturing):
d. Animation:
e. Lighting & Lookdev
f. Compositing.
