The #1 Reason Why Companies Need Writers (It’s not what you Think)

Searching Google for ‘why companies need writers’ is a waste of time. Almost all the articles I came across were about utilitarian reasons (except maybe this one). Surprise surprise.

Here are some ‘top’ reasons:

1. Writers save your time
2. Writers have a wide skill-set
3. Writers are not that expensive

You may think writers will do a better job at promoting themselves, but apparently, that’s not the case.

Now, of course, all these reasons are true (no. 3 being both true and offensive), but they divert attention from what a writer actually brings to the table.

The number one reason why companies need writers is this:

Writers give businesses a human voice.

I came to realize this only recently, even though I am working as a content marketer for the last 7 years or so.

But most of my peers are still unaware of how they actually benefit their employers/clients in a way that no-one else can, or what they are really offering in the job market.

You see, language is what makes us human. You can teach your parrot to speak or your chimpanzee to understand words, but that’s not the point.

As humans, only we have the ability to take a limited vocabulary and limited structures (like grammar and syntax) to create infinite combinations, each making sense and proving useful in unique contexts.

In short, we can use language to communicate with infinite variety.

Just imagine the implications. In a world of personalized marketing where analytics help you track and target individual preferences with ever-increasing accuracy, the ability to create tailored marketing messages is indispensable.

When prospects feel that a business is talking to them personally (which is the opposite of mass marketing), they’re more likely to buy.

But that’s not all.

Story-telling is another uniquely human trait, and writers can create the perfect story for businesses, showing how the customer (hero of the story) overcomes obstacles using a product or service.

Among other reasons, stories are effective because they allow us to share information in a way that is personal and relatable, and this reinforces the central point of this article.

So beyond the technology and design, businesses need a human voice when speaking to their customers, because customers are human.

And this is what writers can do for businesses. It’s the perfect bargain.
