Newcastle United Football Club was founded in 1892 by volunteers after a meeting at the Angel Hotel. The team first played in the Northern League, which they won in their second season. They joined the Football League Second Division in 1908 and finished as runners-up twice before being promoted to the First Division in 1923. Newcastle reached the FA Cup Final for the first time in 1936, but lost 2–1 to Liverpool. The following year they finished runners-up again, this time to Arsenal. Newcastle went on to win their first major trophy in 1951 when they won the FA Cup against Manchester United. In 1955 they reached the European Cup Winners’ Cup final, but lost 6–3 on aggregate to Spanish side Real Madrid. The 1960s were a successful time for Newcastle United as they won two more FA Cups (1966 and 1969) and two League Championships (1963 and 1969). However, during this period there was unrest among some of their fans who objected to the way that manager Tommy Docherty was running the club. This led to Docherty being sacked in 1974 and replaced by Bill Shankly. Under Shankly Newcastle reached three consecutive European Cup semi-finals (1975–1978), but were unable to win any of them.
