Moving from web to mobile.. is it happening??
Let me just get straight to this. People can’t hover over the entities on the mobile as they can on a desktop!! That’s the most common excuse that I have heard from someone to switch over to a desktops. This whole idea in my mind thinking that the world is moving from traditional desktop websites to mobiles has been in my mind for 3 years now. But I can still see many things being done on desktops predominantly like doing a major bank transaction or writing tomorrow’s speech to be delivered on the stage. People still resort to desktops for doing the so called important tasks. They occasionally ask people to wait until they open their laptops or desktops to continue their ongoing conversation. Why this thing got to be this way? Let’s check why?
Mobile phones haven’t grown the way they should have grown. I get frustrated on the thought that I will have to use laptop to do a thing and leave my mobile away. Is it the mobile manufacturing company that have taken over or the government of a particular region has their part to play. But something is blocking the pace of innovation for sure.
The mobile manufacturing companies be it software or hardware have been resistant in bringing their technology to the open. They have kept public and the developer community aloof of the main course. The mobile only approach has been kept kind of “the hated thing” for a very long time. The companies have feared to only keep their mobile web and app and let go of their desktop website. I remember a company called flipkart had their mobile only approach withdrawn within a month’s time. The reason was simple, the people din’t end up buying stuff often from their mobile phones. People kinda just go through the products and don’t end up buying them. That’s a major issue. Why is it letting people do this? In India, the mobile experience is slow compared to its website experience. This makes people believe that their mobile transactions may get stuck due to this.
I have been pondering over this idea for a very long time. The mobile needs to offer something that’s not there on the menu. We always take mobile web as the compromised, less compelling version of the desktop web. The creators need to stop doing that. The creators often try to keep the the important bits of a website in a mobile website and often let go of the beautiful art work if there is any. That to me is an absolute tragedy. Why will a person come again to a place that has some thing less to offer? The answer is simple. NO.
Some people still have the gall to provide a better mobile experience and I admire them for that. We need to move forward guys and if we keep getting stuck at the point where we need to think about whether mobile or desktop, we are in deep trouble. Let’s make a choice then. Let’s not keep ourselves in a dilemma.
If we use non-mobile devices more than 51% of our times then let’s accept them and vice-versa for the other way around. I am not advocating for a certain type of media, just opting to be clear in my mind of what I need to do. My personal experience says that the mobile makers are currently in a state of hiding and aren’t coming out in the open. There has been resilience from the telecom service providers as well. tlkn , a voip calling app I have been a part of has been banned in the UAE as it has been the case with skype, watsapp. That’s so discouraging for the makers. I have learnt recently that they target the mobile only call service providers. The local providers in dubai are mostly government owned and don’t want outsiders to do anything with this. They charge heavy on the calls to the locals and that is bloody dictatorship. That is North Korea in the telecom sector right in front of you.The sight of government and capitalists bringing the technology in the mobile world down brings tears to my eyes. There have been promising things in mobile but they are not reaching the public at large.
I hope this little confusion to end between mobile and web so we don’t give a chance to these type of government and people to go against public mandate.
Peace!!
