What is CBD?
Cannabidiol or CBD is one of approximately 80 phytocannabinoids present in the Cannabis Sativa plant. Cannabinoids are lipids (a.k.a. fatty acids) that interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid, or endogenous cannabinoid system is responsible for maintaining homeostasis in the body and involved in everything from bone formation and metabolism, to immune regulation, inflammation and cancer cell death.
CBD vs THC
How is CBD different than THC? With THC leading the herd and CBD next in line, CBD and THC are the two most abundant cannabinoids in the Cannabis plant. Unlike THC, CBD is non-psychoactive and won’t make you feel high. While THC mostly has an affinity for CB2 receptors, CBD generally works through CB1 receptors as well as a multitude of body pathways scientists don’t yet fully understand. Through its actions CBD exerts a wide variety of health effects throughout the body.
CBD Benefits and Effects
CBD is truly a unique panacea with a great multitude of positive health effects. Here is a list of some of the uses that scientists have been delving into over recent years:
Is CBD Legal?
The legality of CBD depends on both where you are and from where your CBD oil is derived. Widely available for sale online as well as in most of the nation’s health food stores, hemp derived CBD oil is considered okay by the DEA because it comes from the non-psychoactive part of the cannabis plant. According to the law, hemp is cannabis with less than 0.3% THC by dry weight. CBD oil derived from marijuana is still technically considered illegal on the Federal level, though marijuana derived CBD is legal in in 44 states.
High CBD Strains List
Though previous years have seen CBD generally bred out of many strains of cannabis in order to increase levels of the psychoactive THC, some cultivators are responding to modern research and beginning to reverse the trend. Due to the abundant benefits and entourage effects of CBD, breeders are working hard to bring this recessive gene back into the mainstream.
