So what exactly do I mean by friction? Well, according to Physics, ‘friction the resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another’. Similarly, as we are moving through our lives, we encounter a number of instances where we experience friction. It can be in the form of a task made tedious or maybe due to lack of something which could’ve made the task smoother.

User Centered Design is about creating interfaces and experiences the way the end users want them. But design decisions can’t be all left upon the end users, because more often than not people aren’t sure or aren’t right about what they feel they want.

In user-centred design, users and their needs are the main focus of the design process

That’s where the designer’s perspective comes in. Any design is largely influenced by its designer’s perspective. It is like a base on which the design is built. The designer created the base of the design using his own past experiences and the based on it, tries out various possibilities validating them through user research and thus…

Data visualization is the practice of converting data into visuals for easy interpretation, in order to discover patterns and other valuable information. So basically it is done to simplify the process of understanding the data we possess.

But if not done in the correct way, it may lead to creation of visualizations so complex that they require you to break your head even to simply understand the kind of data which they are providing. Usually accompanied with a legend, these visualizations further complicate the process of understanding data, which I think defeats the purpose of visualization itself.

One fine Tuesday, December last year, my friend and I had gone to Subway to grab lunch. We were standing in the queue when we heard the guy ahead mention some sort of offer for T-mobile users, through which he was gonna get his sub for free! My friend and I, both being T-mobile users, decided to try it out and get free lunch for the day. So, we asked the guy the procedure to redeem the offer and he was like go to their app and just click on redeem. So, my friend opened the official T-mobile app, but…

In user experience design, it’s imperative to do user research before you start designing as well as during the design phase. Thus research plays an important role in shaping our designs. But for it to work best, it’s crucial that we follow it the other way around too, that is designing our research well.

Your research is what provides you with all the data, if research isn’t designed in a proper manner, you may end up with incomplete or useless data or at least feeling that you do so.

Thus designing your research is crucial process and the term used…

Last year after completing my undergrad in information technology, I came to Philadelphia to pursue a masters in user experience design. Coming here I realized that almost all my classmates were from a design background, having been graphic designers, visual designers or even architects. So I was the only developer in the class, which made me a bit skeptical about my decision of learning UX design.

What being the only developer in class felt like :D

In our first semester, we had to pick up an existing website, redesign and then develop the redesigned site. Since I had developed websites before, I knew limitations of my skills and that of…

A review of Brainstorming Is Dumb by Annie Sneed

Everyone at some part of their professional life must’ve heard the word ‘brainstorming’. People use it as a magical term which is expected to produce groundbreaking ideas and provide solution to almost every problem that they’re facing. If the company’s experiencing losses, brainstorm! If you’re not making enough sales, brainstorm! If your business is stagnated, brainstorm! Something like:

In almost every company, especially in startups when they’re in a fix, a meeting of all the employees is called and they’re told to ‘brainstorm’ ideas. …

So, while I was doing this crash course on User Psychology, I came across something called the ‘decoy effect’. This effect exploits our cognitive bias to make an option seem superior, with the addition of an inferior ‘decoy option’.

Consider the following example, you go to a theater with your family to watch a nice movie. During the interval, your child insists on having a tub of popcorn. You don’t really want to invest in the expensive in-theater snacks, more so buying something such as a popcorn tub, but then you don’t want your child to keep cribbing either, so…

Sci-fi movies have always given us a glimpse of the future technology and though most of it has fascinated us, it has also given us the terrifying idea called ‘robot apocalypse’. The thought of AI taking over the world and destroying/enslaving mankind, portrayed by movie series like ‘The Terminator’ and ‘The matrix’ have horrified us about the possibility of such a dark future.
