The Sanskrit word Lingam has two parts: Lim and Gam. “Lim” means all objects comes to an end and remains stagnant at one place. “Gam” means the place of recreation. Shivling is an abstract representation of Lord Shiva. It signifies the beginning of life, the pure energy and power of the Creator of the Universe. Shivaling is itself symbolic of nature, meaning Prakriti, the occurrence of formless Omnipotent Lord. According to the ancient belief, Shivling is an undying form that resides in our deepest self, our soul, the Atma. As stated in Linga Purana, Linga is the formless, tasteless and colourless Lord.

Different Tpyes of Shivlings:

Basically there are two main structural differences in the Shivling. One has only Shivling, the egg shaped stone and other one that comes attached with a Yoni. The first is considered the representation of Lord Shiva and the second one represents union of Shiva and Shakti. However both are equally important and are worshipped in Hindu Religion. They are made of many different materials ranging from stone to parad, white marble, precious gemstones, silver and gold.

As far as the geometry of Shilvling is concerned, there are exact proportions that one needs to understand. The height, width, and curvature of the Shivling must have the specified proportion. Also based on the appearances, there are other types of Shivlings. The mukhalinga is the one with face formed from five carved on sides and top), the lingodbhavamurti is a linga emerging out from fiery linga) and another linga is with a cobra on top along with the svayambhuva linga, meaning the self-originated linga.

However, there are several other types and variations of Shivling that are mentioned in many Puranas. Let’s take a look at them in brief. Gandha Shivling, Pushpa Shivling, Gosakru Lingam, Valuka Lingam, Yavagodhumasalija Lingam, Sitakhanda Lingam, Lavana Lingam, Tilapista Lingam, Bhamsa Lingam, Guda Shivling Or Sita Lingam, Vamsankura Lingam, Pishta Lingam, Dhadhidhugdha Lingam, Dhanya Lingam, Phala Lingam, Dhatri Lingam, Navanita Lingam, Garika Lingam, Karpura Lingam, Ayaskanta Lingam, Mouktika Lingam, Suvarana Lingam, Rajita Lingam Kamsya Lingam Trapu Lingam Ayasa Lingam Seesa Lingam Ashtadhtu Lingam Aahtaloha Lingam Vaidurya Lingam Spatika Lingam and Padara Lingam.

Shivling puja procedure:

Irrespective of the Shivling type, the Shivling Puja is a common ritual. Many devotees setup the Shivling at their Puja altar to worship it daily. The Puja starts with abhishek of lingam with water followed by oil, honey or pure ghee. It is advisable to use Belwa leaves as an offering. Many use Tulsi leaves, but that is not recommended because Tulsi is affiliated with Lord Vishnu. Use Lotus or jasmine flowers as offering. Light an incense and burn the diya before Shivling. Seek the blessings of Shivling and distribute the Prasad to other devotees.
