I agree with everything you say but offer two cautions (1) A lot of people are getting PhD’s just for the piece of paper, and to avoid real life, and often, they are just making stuff up for the sake of publishing/graduating, not really advancing science in any deeply thoughtful way (2) A lot of recent PhD’s I know are just so burnt out they want to live their 20s in their 30s, party, be glam, travel, and just make terrible employees, even if you are giving them world changing tasks.
